HEARING LOSS EFFECTS COUPLES

An online study carried out in the United States of America by the Harris Interactive for Cochlear Americans has revealed that hearing loss hits North American relationships. Among the 27 million hearing-impaired North Americans, it is relationships in couples that are hardest hit by hearing problems. Besides this, hearing loss has a negative influence on the hearing impaired person’s relationships with friends, family, and colleagues. According to this study of more than 2,500 over-18s, 54% admitted feeling frustrated on communicating with people who showed no consideration for their hearing loss; 32% felt really annoyed; and 18% said they were ignored. The research also highlighted that half the hearing-impaired persons surveyed have not sought treatment, and only 20% were aware of the many possibilities currently available to tackle hearing loss. Audiologist, teacher, and lecturer at Mercy University’s College of Health Professions, Pat Chute, claimed: “It is a tragedy that people are not taking measures to improve their hearing health when so many treatment possibilities are within their reach.” Source. hear-it
